Announcing Community Connections 2018-2019!

This year is going to be full of rich conversation and learning together. We are so excited to see you on Sunday mornings from 10:00-10:45 am!

Throughout this year, we will have the chance to hear special one-time presentations on a variety of topics from many different leaders, as well as engaging in some subjects that will span multiple sessions, outlined below.

Book Club – Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee

This will be our book for the fall. It is the gripping story of a brave Lutheran woman who helped work for peace in her nation of Liberia and who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Book Club will meet on September 23 and October 28 and will schedule future dates together from there. The group will select a new book together for Spring.

Public Deliberation Forums
We will be discussing a number of difficult issues that face our world today using a carefully designed process called public deliberation forums. This approach to conversation creates space for us to hear one another beyond differences of opinion that too often divide us.

Topics will include –
September: Mass Shootings
October: Work & Higher Education
November: Food Access
December: Immigration

Later topics may include Addiction & Recovery, the Divided State of America, Human Trafficking, Environmental Issues, Mental Illness, and Living Healthy.

Specially trained facilitators will help guide these conversations. If you are interested in being a facilitator and feel you have the spiritual gifts of listening, time management, and being a
non-anxious presence, feel free to contact Pastor Carolyn (pastorcarolyn@peaceaustin.org) about completing a brief online training.

Bible Study
Shortly after each public deliberation forum, we will meet for a Bible Study on the same topic to see how our sacred story might speak to these complex questions in our time.
