Book Club Update

In October the book club is reading The Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen. In November, the club is reading Last Dance on the Starlight Pier. Both historical novels are by local author, Sarah Bird. Sarah Bird is presenting and answering questions at our November meeting on Thursday, November 10th at 1:30 via Zoom.

The Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen is a novel based on the true story of an escaped slave, Cathy Williams, who disguised herself as a man and served as a Buffalo soldier for two years during the Civil War. Her grandmother was one of the famous Amazon Warriors (queens) of Dahomey, Africa – thus she was a daughter of a daughter of a queen, captured and enslaved. It is an exciting book.
Last Dance on the Starlight Pier is a novel describing the life of dance marathons in the 1930, as well as the family-run operations of vice in Galveston in that time period. The characters are likeable and resilient, overcoming great adversity to find home, family and friends.
